About Colomansfest

The Colomansfest with the Colomansritt is a traditional pilgrimage and rider procession in Schwangau in the Allgäu region, at the foot of the royal castles. On the second Sunday in October, around 200 riders in traditional costume process to the baroque St. Coloman pilgrimage church, where horses and animals are blessed – a living custom in honor of the patron saint of animals, Coloman.

Custom in Honor of Saint Coloman

The Colomansfest is one of the most impressive traditional festivals in the Allgäu. It honors Saint Coloman, who is revered as the patron saint of animals. Coloman's Day on October 13th is one of the most important and highest holidays in Schwangau.

The Colomansritt

The highlight is the Colomansritt: Around 200 riders in traditional costume process with festively decorated horses – adorned with colorful ribbons, flowers, and bows – from the town hall to the St. Coloman pilgrimage church. A music ensemble leads the procession, the order of which is regulated by the statutes of the Sankt Coloman Association.

Animal Blessing at the Pilgrimage Church

At the baroque St. Coloman pilgrimage church, picturesquely located in the Allgäu landscape, a church service takes place. The priest blesses the participants and the animals from horseback with a relic of Saint Coloman. Thousands of spectators line the route every year.
