Research you can touch in Weimar and Weimarer Land
Weimar is world-renowned as the city of Classicism — Goethe, Schiller, Herder — and Modernism — Bauhaus. Less known is Weimar's scientific profile: the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, one of the most distinguished universities for architecture, design, media, and civil engineering, and the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT, one of Germany's most prestigious music conservatories. The Long Night of Sciences makes this profile tangible for the general public once a year.
As the name suggests: participating institutions open their doors in the evening and at night. Visitors get a look into laboratories, workshops, studios, and concert halls. Lectures, demonstrations, experiments, and hands-on activities showcase the full spectrum — from building physics and media design to musicology. In addition, research institutions and innovative companies from the Weimarer Land are involved.
The Science Night is aimed at everyone: families with children, pupils, students, seniors. For young people, study and career guidance is also a focus — many university booths provide information about degree programs and career paths.
During the event, a free bus shuttle operates between the participating locations. Free admission. This accessibility is intentionally programmatic — science should be accessible to the entire city community, not just to the academically educated.
With just under 65,000 inhabitants, Weimar is a small city, but thanks to the Bauhaus-Universität and HfM Franz Liszt, it is a university city with an above-average young, international audience. The Science Night in November complements the city's cultural program with a deliberately research-oriented note — as a counterpart to art exhibitions and classical concerts.
The 2026 Science Night brings together universities, non-university research institutions, and innovative companies from Weimar and Weimarer Land. The focus is on hands-on formats and direct exchange between researchers and the public. The Bauhaus-Universität opens its laboratories and workshops — from building physics and digital media to architecture. The Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT invites you to concerts, workshops, and insights into musicological research. Research institutions from Weimarer Land complement the program.
Young visitors receive targeted study and career guidance at university booths. Families with children will find numerous stations with age-appropriate experiments. A free bus shuttle connects all locations.
