Grand Ceramics Festival on Easter Monday in Höhr-Grenzhausen, the only small town in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Ceramics
„Höhr-Grenzhausen brennt Keramik“ is one of the most important ceramic events in the Westerwald and has marked the start of the tourist season in the Kannenbäckerland for over 20 years. On Easter Monday, the town centre of the pottery town transforms into a vibrant showcase of contemporary and traditional ceramics.
In 2026, the festival opens on Monday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Workshops and galleries invite visitors, artists present their work, and demonstrations on the potter's wheel and at the kilns provide insights into the craft. A free shuttle service connects the venues, and parking is free.
Höhr-Grenzhausen is the only small town in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the category Crafts and Folk Art. This international award honours the town's centuries-old ceramic tradition and its current combination of craft, design, research, and education. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum, the Higher Vocational School for Ceramics, the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, and numerous independent potteries and designer studios form a unique cluster.
For over two decades, „Höhr-Grenzhausen brennt Keramik“ on Easter Monday has marked the beginning of the tourist season in the Kannenbäckerland. The festival serves as both a showcase for local workshops and a meeting point for collectors, designers, and enthusiasts. Thousands of visitors from Germany and abroad use the extended Easter weekend to visit the pottery town.
Potteries, workshops, and galleries open their doors throughout the town. Visitors can watch the artists at work: on the potter's wheel, glazing, firing, and decorating. Many workshops display their current collections, and some invite visitors to participate. The Ceramics Museum presents special exhibitions.
The spectrum ranges from traditional Westerwald salt-glazed stoneware decorated in blue to contemporary designer ceramics and artistic sculptures and installations. The diversity of styles and techniques makes the festival a unique tour through contemporary ceramic art.
To allow visitors to easily move between the often widely dispersed workshops and galleries, the organiser offers a free shuttle service. Parking in the town area is also free. This allows for a relaxed exploration of the festival without the constant search for parking spaces.
