Tradition Since the 1970s
Löbnitz, a municipality on the southern edge of the Schladitz Bay in the Nordsachsen district, has been home to one of Saxony's most traditional riding tournaments for decades. The St. Georg Löbnitz Riding and Driving Club has been organizing an annual tournament since 1979, which has grown over time into a four-day equestrian sport and folk festival (Volksfest). The 48th edition will take place in 2026.
High-Level Equestrian Sport
Riders and horses from Nordsachsen, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt participate in the tournament. Classes range from the E-level (beginner) rider competition to Class M* in show jumping and corresponding levels in dressage. Pony and youth competitions complement the program and are particularly popular with the audience. Several thousand visitors come every year for the competitions and the park festival.
Park Festival with Folk Festival Character
Parallel to the tournament, a multi-day park festival develops around the riding facility and the adjacent castle park. Showmen set up rides, clubs introduce themselves, a festival stage offers live music in the evenings with regional bands and cover groups. The culinary offerings are hearty: bratwurst, fries, stuffed cabbage rolls (Krautwickel), and the obligatory festival beer from Nordsachsen.
Summer Outing by the Lake
The proximity to the Schladitz Bay — one of the post-mining lakes of the Goitzsche landscape — makes the tournament particularly attractive for families from the greater Leipzig area. Visitors to the riding tournament can combine their day with a swim or a walk by the lake. The Löbnitz tournament is thus much more than just equestrian sport — it is a typical summer outing for the entire region.
