Traditional Advent market by the village pond of Alt-Lichtenrade
Lichtenrade is a district in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg borough, right on the border with Brandenburg. Unlike many Berlin districts, Lichtenrade has preserved its medieval village center: a village green with a pond, the Protestant village church from the 13th century, and low brick houses. It is precisely this setting that makes the Lichtenrader Lichtermarkt one of Berlin's most atmospheric district markets – far from the hustle and bustle of the city center, embedded in a real village structure.
With around 120 stalls, the Lichtenrader Lichtermarkt is one of Berlin's largest non-profit Advent markets. The stallholders are associations, initiatives, church communities, schools, and kindergartens from Lichtenrade and the surrounding area. They sell local handicrafts: wooden goods, ceramics, beekeeping products (honey, wax, beeswax candles), homemade sewn items, and baked goods. The proceeds go to the associations' work and social projects.
Lichtenrade celebrated its 650th anniversary in 2025. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the village pond and village church were illuminated nightly from November 30, 2025, to January 6, 2026 – a lighting concept that remained visible even after the market ended. A repeat in 2026 is possible but not yet confirmed at the time of research.
Food stalls offer bratwurst and grilled items, along with waffles, soups, mulled wine, and children's punch. As the market runs for six hours (1 PM–7 PM) and the weather at the end of November is typically cool to frosty, mulled wine and soups are the culinary anchors. Arrival by public transport is expressly recommended – the village pond is in a quiet residential area with no significant parking facilities.
The 48th edition adheres to the stable, well-tested format of the market. Opening in the afternoon, continuous market operation until early evening, festive lighting of the stalls, and – if repeated – of the village pond and village church. Stall registration is handled by the Tempelhof-Schöneberg District Office and is typically announced in late summer 2026.
Due to its location on the southeastern outskirts of Berlin, accessible by public transport, the market primarily attracts residents of Lichtenrade and neighboring Brandenburg communities – plus a growing number of Berliners from the city center who come for the village atmosphere. Compared to the large commercial markets in the city center, it's a significantly quieter event.
In the anniversary year 2025, the village pond and village church were illuminated nightly between November 30, 2025, and January 6, 2026. A repeat in 2026 is possible but not yet finally confirmed at the time of research.
S-Bahn S2 to Lichtenrade (terminus from the direction of Tempelhof), then about a 10-minute walk to the Alt-Lichtenrade village pond. Bus M76, X76, 175, or 275 to "Alt-Lichtenrade". Difficult by car – few parking spaces near the village church.
Free admission. Stalls, food, and mulled wine are paid for on-site. Many stall proceeds go to non-profit projects and association work.
Warm clothing – the market is outdoors, by the water, and without patio heaters. Cash recommended, as many association stalls do not accept cards.
