About Brucker Leonhardifahrt

The Brucker Leonhardifahrt is one of the most famous Leonhardi Rides in Upper Bavaria and has been celebrated annually in Fürstenfeldbruck since 1966. In honor of Saint Leonard, the patron saint of horses and stable animals, festively decorated horse-drawn carriages, coaches, riders, brass bands, and marching groups parade through the city center. In front of the Leonhardikirche, horses and animals are blessed. The tradition dates back to a vow made in 1743 when citizens, facing a cattle plague, asked Saint Leonard for help. The procession is accompanied by a vibrant autumn market with a beer tent, funfair, and dance events.

A Vow from 1743

The Brucker Leonhardifahrt has deep religious origins: in 1743, a cattle plague struck Fürstenfeldbruck. The citizens asked Saint Leonard, the patron saint of animals, for help and vowed to hold a service in his honor. This vow evolved into the tradition that has taken place annually in its current form since 1966.

The Procession with Horse Blessing

The highlight is the festive procession through the city center. Numerous festively decorated horse-drawn carriages, coaches, and riders – accompanied by brass bands and marching groups – are led to the Leonhardikirche, where horses and animals are blessed. A votive Mass in front of the Leonhardikirche forms the spiritual core.

Autumn Market and Folk Festival

Around the Leonhardifahrt, an autumn market with a beer tent, funfair, and dance events takes place. Thus, religious custom is combined with a secular folk festival character to create a celebration for the entire region.

Living Tradition

The Leonhardifahrt is one of the major traditional events in the district of Fürstenfeldbruck. The images of the decorated carriages in front of the Fürstenfeld Monastery complex make it a photogenic highlight of the event year.
