Historic citizens' festival against the backdrop of Mildenstein Castle
Leisnig, a small town in the Mulde Valley in the Mittelsachsen district, is overlooked by the mighty Mildenstein Castle — one of the oldest castles in Saxony, whose history dates back to the 10th century. This backdrop makes the Castle and Old Town Festival one of the most atmospheric citizens' festivals in Mittelsachsen.
The festival is divided into two areas: From the church square to the Burglehn (castle grounds), a medieval settlement is created with a craftspeople's alley, historical demonstrations, and culinary specialties from olden times. The main stage is set up on the market square, featuring a varied music program on both festival days. At Lindenplatz, showmen set up rides and amusement stalls.
The craftspeople's alley between the tavern and the Burglehn is the heart of the festival: blacksmiths, potters, spinners, weavers, and cooks demonstrate old techniques at work. Monks and nuns from the nearby Kloster Buch are present, as is the famous «Stiefelwache» (Boot Guard), which displays the legendary giant boot of the town of Leisnig (a historical landmark). Show fights by knight tournament groups and medieval music create the atmosphere.
Embedded within the Castle and Old Town Festival is the «Nacht der Schlösser» (Night of the Castles) — a statewide event where castles and palaces in the Free State of Saxony open their gates late into the night. In Leisnig, this means: Mildenstein Castle offers special tours, illuminated courtyards, and an evening concert program. Those who combine the citizens' festival and the nocturnal castle experience one of the most beautiful festival evenings a Saxon citizens' festival can offer.
The city of Leisnig will publish the detailed program a few weeks before the festival on leisnig.de. The division into two areas — medieval settlement from Kirchplatz to Burglehn, main stage at the market — will be maintained as in previous years.
The highlight on Saturday evening is the «Nacht der Schlösser» with special tours of Mildenstein Castle, an illuminated courtyard, and an evening concert program. The castle belongs to Schlösserland Sachsen and opens its gates late into the night.
