About sommerFESTIVAL
sommerFESTIVAL — edition 2026
Eleven Days of Open-Air Programme
The 2026 festival week spans eleven days – with breaks between individual concert evenings during which the theatre programme of the Allgäu Open-Air Stage (including "Frei sein!", "The Magical Land of Oz") is performed. This ensures continuous operation of the stage throughout the late summer.
Daily Highlights
The opening on Aug 27 features Max Mutzke with the SWR Big Band – a top-tier pop voice with one of Europe's most renowned Big Band formations. Howard Carpendale (Aug 29) appeals to the loyal generation of Schlager fans, the Egerländer Musikanten anniversary concert (Aug 30) celebrates 70 years of Egerländer Musikanten – a central figure in the Bohemian brass music tradition. Matthias Reim (Sep 2) and Melissa Naschenweng (Sep 5) represent modern Schlager and Alpine pop sounds. The finale is marked by the Spider Murphy Gang with an unplugged concert on Sep 6.

Allgäu Open-Air Stage – a unique setting
The Allgäu Open-Air Stage Altusried has been a landmark of the Upper Bavarian-Allgäu cultural landscape for generations. With around 2,500 seats, a characteristic wooden/natural backdrop, and a stage with excellent acoustics, it is considered one of the most beautiful open-air stages in Europe. Traditionally, the stage is used for theatre productions (classical plays, Schiller plays) and for music events – the sommerFESTIVAL is the main musical attraction of the season.
Programme Line-up: Broad and Diverse
The sommerFESTIVAL's programme is a cross-section of German-language entertainment music: Schlager stars, pop stars, Big Band classics, tribute shows, Austropop legends, country/folk acts, and indie tours alternate. This curatorial breadth – which many festivals shy away from – is one of Altusried's secrets to success: each festival evening has its own audience, and over the eleven festival days, the Allgäu region becomes a regional open-air hotspot.
2026 – The Highlight Programme
The 2026 programme is particularly packed: Max Mutzke with the SWR Big Band (Aug 27), The Queen Tribute Show (Aug 28), Howard Carpendale (Aug 29), the grand Egerländer Musikanten Band Anniversary (Aug 30, for the band's 70th anniversary, with Alexander Wurz), Matthias Reim (Sep 2), Melissa Naschenweng (Sep 5), and the festival finale with Spider Murphy Gang unplugged (Sep 6). In addition, other theatre productions such as "Frei sein!" and "The Magical Land of Oz" run concurrently as part of the summer schedule.
Altusried and the Allgäu Region
Altusried, a market town with around 10,500 inhabitants in the district of Oberallgäu, belongs to the cultural heartland of the Allgäu region. The municipality is also known for the famous Altusried Folk Theatre Festival with a tradition of over 150 years – former amateur ensembles that made theatre history with their independent productions. In the summer of 2025, the Allgäu Open-Air Stage attracted around 23,000 visitors – a rising trend.
