Tradition for St. Lawrence's Day
St. Lawrence's Day on August 10th is an important saint's day in Rhenish Catholicism. In numerous parish communities – including Bonn-Lessenich – it is celebrated with a patronal festival and a Kirmes (fair). The Laurentius-Kirmes in Lessenich has been preserving this tradition for generations and provides the district with a major annual event.
On the Dorfplatz Lessenich
The venue is the historic Dorfplatz Lessenich on Roncallistraße. Here, showmen, clubs, and the local committee Lessenich-Meßdorf set up their stalls. A chain carousel, shooting gallery, bratwurst and crêpe stands, beer garden, and amusement rides form the classic Kirmes setting.
Patronal Festival with Festive Service
The highlight on Sunday is the festive church service in honor of St. Lawrence in the parish church. The parish community, clubs, and marksmen march to the village fair after the service. The combination of tradition, church, and Volksfest makes the Laurentius-Kirmes special.
Family and District Festival
The Kirmes is significantly smaller than the major folk festivals in Bonn, but more intimate and district-focused. Families from Lessenich-Meßdorf meet, clubs present their work, and neighbors sit together. It's a Volksfest and a local get-together all in one.
Lessenich – a Historic Bonn District
Lessenich-Meßdorf is located in the west of Bonn, between the city center and the Bornheim area. The district has retained its village character, with its own parish church, village square, and established clubs. The Laurentius-Kirmes is THE district festival of the year – an anchor of identity that preserves the rural roots of this Bonn district.
Local Committee as Organizer
The local committee Lessenich-Meßdorf organizes the Kirmes on a voluntary basis. The parish community, the St. Lawrence Marksmen's Club, KFD (Catholic Women's Movement), Carnival Club, and sports clubs together form the festival committee. The City of Bonn supports with permits and infrastructure.
