Traditional Rhenish fair with "Köttzug" and "Zacheies Burning" on the Hardtberg
The Herbstkirmes Duisdorf, alongside the Frühjahrskirmes (Spring Fair), is one of the two major folk festival dates organized annually by the Ortsausschuss Festausschüsse Duisdorf (OFA) in Bonn's west. From September 4th to 7th, 2026, it will animate the center of the Duisdorf district in the Hardtberg borough — between Rochusplatz, Rochusstraße, Villemomblerstraße, and Europaplatz. While the Spring Fair takes place at the end of May/beginning of June, the Herbstkirmes is considered the larger and more traditional event: a more elaborate program, more stage performances, and the typical club customs that give the OFA festivals their Rhenish character.
With around 13,000 inhabitants, Duisdorf is one of the largest districts in Bonn's Hardtberg borough, located west of Bonn's city center. The historic town center around Rochusplatz and Rochuskirche provides a compact setting where the fair is skillfully integrated. Within a few hundred meters, you'll find rides for children and teenagers, classic carousels, shooting galleries, lottery stalls, and, of course, the OFA's own drinks stand, the proceeds of which directly support the district's senior citizen activities. This integration of folk festival and social commitment is one of the hallmarks of Duisdorf's fair tradition.
The Köttzug is the heart of the Herbstkirmes and clearly distinguishes it from commercial funfair events. On Saturday and Monday, members of Duisdorf's clubs parade through the town center in a traditional procession, collecting donations, goods, and money from shops, residents, and visitors. The proceeds go to the Seniorennachmittag (Seniors' Afternoon) — an annual event organized by the OFA for Duisdorf's elderly residents. Anyone who experiences the parade on Saturday afternoon will see drums, flags, historical club life, and what many Rhenish fairs have lost today: a folk festival with local identity.
The traditional end of the fair on Monday evening is the condemnation and burning of "Zacheies" — a straw effigy that symbolically represents everything that went wrong in the past year. A playful "court hearing" culminates in the ritual burning of the figure — comparable to the Rhenish Nubbelverbrennen at the end of Carnival. This ensures the fair doesn't end with a quiet fade-out, but with a spectacular, almost theatrical climax that underscores Duisdorf's unique character.
Duisdorf is accessible in about 12 minutes from Bonn Hauptbahnhof via tram line 18 (stop Duisdorf Bahnhof). Bonn bus lines 605, 606, and 631 have central stops. By car, take the A565 (exit Bonn-Hardtberg). Parking is scarce during the fair days — public transport is recommended. The distances between Rochusplatz, Europaplatz, and Rochusstraße are short: all locations can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
