Traditional St. Martin's Market in the Old Town of Velbert-Langenberg with a Rider Procession
As November ushers in early winter in Velbert-Langenberg, one of the most beautiful market atmospheres in the Bergisches Land returns: The Langenberger Martinsmarkt opens its wooden stalls around the Old Church in the historic old town from November 12th to 14th, 2026. Three days of mulled wine, bratwurst, Christmas shopping, and — as the highlight — the traditional St. Martin's rider procession on Saturday evening.
The Martinsmarkt focuses on a balanced mix of enjoyment and craftsmanship:
The emotional heart of the market is the St. Martin's Procession on Saturday, November 14th, 2026 — starting at 5:00 PM at Froweinplatz. St. Martin rides high on horseback, followed by students from local schools with their handmade lanterns. The procession winds through the cobblestone alleys of the old town to the Old Church, where the traditional St. Martin's bonfire is lit and the symbolic scene of the coat-sharing (St. Martin shares his coat with a beggar) is performed. Afterwards, there are Weckmänner (sweet bread rolls) for the children.
The district of Langenberg is the historic and most atmospheric part of the city of Velbert in the Mettmann district. Until the municipal reform in 1975, Langenberg was an independent town — and retained its old-town character with slate-roofed half-timbered houses, the Old Church from the 16th century, and narrow alleys. Also worth seeing are the Sender Langenberg (one of Germany's oldest radio transmitters) and the former WDR studio.
The district town of Velbert, with around 80,000 inhabitants, is located in the southern Bergisches Land, between Wuppertal, Essen, and Düsseldorf. Known as the "City of Castles and Locks" due to its tradition as the center of the German lock and key industry (DOM, BKS, Abus, Sieger, and many more produce here). The Langenberger Martinsmarkt is one of the city's three major annual Volksfeste — alongside the Velbert Christmas Market and the Neviger Pilgrimage.
The organizer is the Heimat- und Bürgerverein Velbert-Langenberg (Local and Civic Association), which has been organizing the market for years in cooperation with the Langenberg church communities and local businesses. A volunteer structure responsible for the market's family atmosphere — not a large commercial event, but an authentic neighborhood festival.
The Langenberger Martinsmarkt 2026 transforms the historic old town into a reflective market meeting point for three days. Wooden stalls offering mulled wine, bratwurst, potato pancakes, Advent decorations, and handicrafts line the area around the Old Church. The highlight is Saturday evening with the St. Martin's rider procession starting from Froweinplatz, followed by the traditional St. Martin's bonfire. Organizer: Heimat- und Bürgerverein Velbert-Langenberg.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and market goods at the daily prices of the stalls. Raffle with prizes for a small fee.
By public transport: Bus lines from Velbert-Zentrum and Essen-Kupferdreh to Langenberg. By car: A535 or A44, then B227 to Velbert, continue to Langenberg. Parking on the outskirts — the old town is partially closed off.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and market goods at the daily prices of the stalls.
Those who want to experience the St. Martin's Procession should be at Froweinplatz at 5 PM on Saturday — the children with their handmade lanterns make for particularly beautiful pictures. Afterwards, head to the St. Martin's bonfire at the Old Church and the mulled wine buzz in the market area.
