Lower Bavaria's oldest Volksfest since 1339 — late summer festival with three beer tents, amusement park, and market stalls on the Grieserwiese
The Landshuter Bartlmädult boasts an almost 700-year history. The festival was founded in 1339 by Bavarian Duke Heinrich XIV., who granted the citizens of Landshut an annual market to promote trade — originally in the area of today's old town. Since 1949, the Dult has taken place on the Grieserwiese on the banks of the Isar river. 2026 marks the 687th edition, making it one of the oldest continuously celebrated Volksfests in Germany.
The name "Bartlmädult" comes from St. Bartholomew's Day on August 24th, an old market date in the Catholic calendar. A Dult is a historically evolved annual market with a Volksfest character — typically Bavarian and celebrated twice a year in Landshut: in spring as "Frühjahrsdult" and in late summer as Bartlmädult. The late summer edition is the larger and more traditional of the two.
Unlike the Munich Oktoberfest, the Bartlmädult does not have a central giant beer tent but three separate festival tents, each with its own profile:
Live bands play in each tent, ranging from brass music and folk-rock to cover bands. The festival tent beer comes from local Landshut breweries (Wittmann, Wieninger, among others).
The amusement park at the Bartlmädult is one of the largest in Lower Bavaria: classics like Break Dance, Music Express, Crazy Mine, the new Ferris wheel Northern Eye, Hawaii Swing, DTM Racing, Euroscooter, Kick Down, Delirium, and for children, Mini UFO Jet, Kindersportkarussell, Kindertraumschleife, and Kindereisenbahn. In parallel, the Verkaufsdult — the historic market section with stalls selling household goods, textiles, sweets, and traditional costumes — is open.
Landshut is the capital of Lower Bavaria and is located about 70 km northeast of Munich on the Isar river. The medieval old town with the famous Trausnitz Castle, the Gothic St. Martin's Parish Church (the world's tallest brick church tower), and the atmosphere of Dreifaltigkeitsplatz is one of the most beautiful in Bavaria. The city is also known for the Landshuter Hochzeit, which takes place every four years. A visit to the Dult can be ideally combined with a stroll through the old town.
The 687th Bartlmädult will take place from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 30, 2026, on the Grieserwiese. The organizer is the City of Landshut. As every year, the three festival tents and the amusement park open on Friday, and the market stalls open on Saturday.
The namesake St. Bartholomew's Day falls on Monday, August 24th, in 2026 — traditionally a special day in the Dult program.
