The Bavarian Jazz Weekend Regensburg is one of Europe's largest free jazz festivals. For four days, the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Regensburg transforms into an open stage: over 100 concerts on numerous large and small stages will be heard in squares, courtyards, restaurants, bars, and along the Danube. Admission to the open-air concerts is free. In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 45th edition.

The 45th edition of the Bavarian Jazz Weekend Regensburg takes place from July 2 to 5, 2026. Over 100 concerts on large and small stages throughout the Old Town, admission to the open-air concerts is free.

From July 2 to 5, 2026, the Bavarian Jazz Weekend Regensburg will celebrate its 45th edition. Over 100 concerts will fill large stages like Haidplatz, Bismarckplatz, and Domplatz, as well as numerous small stages in courtyards, bars, and on the Danube.

The neighboring town of Kallmünz is also included via a free shuttle. The artistic direction is by Christian Sommerer; the program is shaped by a curatorial board of jazz scene experts.

Getting There

Regensburg's Old Town is within walking distance of the main train station. Due to its city center location, arriving by train is recommended. A free shuttle bus runs between Regensburg and Kallmünz during the festival.

Jazz in the City, a City in Jazz

The Bavarian Jazz Weekend Regensburg is an institution of the German jazz scene and one of the largest free jazz festivals in Europe. Its motto "Jazz in the City, a City in Jazz" gets to the heart of the concept: the entire Regensburg Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006, becomes the festival stage.

Over 100 Concerts in the Old Town

Over four days, more than 100 concerts will take place – on large stages such as Haidplatz, Bismarckplatz, and Domplatz, as well as on numerous small stages in courtyards, restaurants, bars, and on the Danube. The neighboring town of Kallmünz is also included via a free shuttle service, for example with Atelier Wigg and Kulturschmiede.

Artistic Direction and Organizers

The organizer is the Cultural Office of the City of Regensburg. Christian Sommerer has been the artistic director since autumn 2021. A curatorial board, including JazzZeitung, the Berlin ensemble gamut inc, Jazzclub Regensburg, and the Jazz department of the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg, helps shape the program.

The festival ranges from gentle melodies in dreamy courtyards to rousing sessions in restaurants and bars. The combination of a medieval backdrop, free admission, and musical diversity makes the Jazz Weekend a flagship event for the Oberpfalz and Bavaria.
