High-quality ceramics market for graduates of the Landshut School of Ceramics
"Haferl" is Bavarian for a cup or mug – the traditional ceramic drinking vessel, often artfully glazed and painted. The market's name directly refers to this everyday object, which has its own design language in Bavaria and has been developed further at the Landshut School of Ceramics for decades.
Landshut is home to the Vocational School for Ceramics and Design, one of Germany's most important ceramic training institutions. Students from all over the German-speaking world come to Landshut to complete a three-year full-time training in classic ceramic craftsmanship. The Haferlmarkt is the showcase for their work – both of current classes and of graduates from several decades.
The Freyung is one of the oldest squares in Landshut's Old Town, an elongated square in the heart of the Gothic city between St. Martin's Parish Church and Trausnitz Castle. During the Haferlmarkt, between 50 and 80 stalls are set up here, with each exhibitor's spot dedicated to an individual ceramic artist. The contact between buyer and artist is direct – stories and inspirations are included.
A beer and coffee garden opens under the trees near St. Jodok's Church, accompanied by live music and an accompanying program. In 2026, the exhibition "Blume trifft Vase" (Flower Meets Vase) will run concurrently in the town hall, showcasing how contemporary floristry and handmade vases engage in dialogue – admission free.
The Haferlmarkt takes place every year parallel to the Landshut Art Weekend – throughout the weekend, galleries, studios, and workshops in the Old Town open their doors. Visitors to the Haferlmarkt can easily combine a stroll through the Freyung with studio visits in the historic city center.
The 44th Landshut Haferlmarkt opens its doors from September 11 to 13, 2026, on the Freyung. Over 50 exhibitors – all graduates of the School of Ceramics in Landshut – present their works: from the classic Haferl (Bavarian drinking cup) to bowls, vases, and functional ceramics, as well as sculptures and experimental objects.
Concurrently, the exhibition "Blume trifft Vase" (Flower Meets Vase) is running in the town hall, showcasing the interplay between contemporary floristry and handmade ceramic vases – admission free. Additionally, a beer and coffee garden under the trees near St. Jodok's Church provides a place for breaks, and live music offers a musical backdrop.
The weekend coincides with the Landshut Art Weekend (Sep 11–13) – galleries and studios in the Old Town open their doors.
