Practical information — La Strada Bremen
Getting There
All performance venues are centrally located in Bremen's city centre and easily accessible on foot. Take the tram from the main train station to Domsheide or Schüssel; from there, the Wallanlagen, Market Square, and Domshof are just a few minutes away. Parking in the city centre is limited – travelling by public transport or bicycle is recommended.
Admission
All open-air performances are free. After each performance, the hat goes around – a donation of five to twenty euros is appreciated and goes directly to the artists.
Tips
The programme and daily schedule will be published in May. Allow enough time to move between venues and take time for the smaller stages off the main routes.
The City Becomes the Stage
When La Strada takes place, Bremen's city centre is fundamentally transformed. Squares become arenas, streets turn into dance floors, and park meadows become small festival stages. For four days, around 100 international companies and solo performers take over the historic locations of the Hanseatic city – from the Wallanlagen around the old city walls, via the Market Square and the Town Hall, into the winding Schnoor quarter and the alternative district.
An International Scene Visits Bremen
The programme ranges from contemporary circus to dance theatre, acrobatics, slapstick, juggling, and mask theatre, to poetic walk acts and site-specific installations. Companies from all over Europe, as well as from South America, Australia, or Asia, are regular guests. Special attention is given to young, experimental formats, which La Strada consistently promotes: the festival sees itself as a platform for innovative and unconventional street art that is breaking new ground across the continent.
Free Admission - Hat After the Performance
One of La Strada's most beautiful features: Admission to all open-air performances is free. After each performance, the hat goes around, and the audience's donations go directly to the artists. This model makes the festival accessible to a broad audience while focusing on the direct appreciation of the performance.
La Strada Goes to School
For several years, the special format La Strada macht Schule! (La Strada Goes to School!) has brought school classes to special morning performances. Every year, around 2,000 Bremen schoolchildren get to know contemporary street art. Workshops and encounters with the artists are also part of the educational programme.
A Tradition Since 1995
Launched in 1995 by theaterkontor Bremen, La Strada is now one of Europe's most important street art festivals. It is an integral part of Bremen's summer cultural calendar and brings the spirit of the independent scene into the city centre. The Hanseatic public has long adopted the festival: families, tourists, students, and culture enthusiasts from all over the northwest come every year to be surprised.
