Advent Magic in Front of the UNESCO Town Hall
When the historic Bremen Market Square transforms into a sea of lights with around 170 stalls, the most wonderful time of the year begins in the Hanseatic city. Directly in front of the over 600-year-old Town Hall – a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the Roland statue – a winter village emerges between Bremen's landmarks: the Town Hall, Roland, Schütting, and the Town Musicians of Bremen. The scent of roasted almonds, gingerbread, and mulled wine wafts through the alleys, carousels spin, and the festive lights reflect off the brick facades of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
A Tradition of Over 160 Years
The first Bremen Christmas Market took place as early as 1857 – and even then, it was located between the Town Hall, Cathedral, and Roland statue, exactly where it still stands today. This makes it one of the most traditional Advent markets in Northern Germany. For four weeks, from the end of November until just before Christmas Eve, the stalls offer handicrafts, gift ideas, and culinary specialties. It is usually open Sunday to Thursday until 8:30 PM, and a little later on Fridays and Saturdays.
Schlachte Magic: Maritime Middle Ages on the Weser
Just a few minutes' walk away, the Schlachte Magic has complemented the offerings since 2004. On the historic Schlachte river promenade, around 100 wooden huts present their wares in a medieval-maritime ambiance – with festively illuminated historic ships and ice-blue lighting along the promenade. Traditionally, Advent in Bremen is opened with a atmospheric fireworks display over the Weser River, which draws thousands to the banks.

Hanseatic Christmas Tradition
The combination of medieval architecture, Hanseatic self-confidence, and Northern German coziness makes the Bremen Christmas Market one of the most popular destinations during Advent in the North – a must for anyone who wants to experience the magic of the Hanseatic city in winter. Due to the large crowds, traveling by bus and tram is strongly recommended.
