Classical Music in the Cathedral and State Museum — Greifswald Venue of the Festspiele MV
The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was founded in 1990, the year of German reunification and immediately after the dissolution of the GDR — a cultural bridge between East and West. Since then, it has grown into one of Europe's most important classical music festivals. Approximately 190 concerts are held every summer (mid-June to mid-September) at over 100 venues across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, from the Baltic coast to the Mecklenburg Lake District — including castles, barns, halls, churches, and open-air sites.
Greifswald has been a regular stop for the Festspiele for years. The main venues in the Hanseatic city are the Gothic St. Nicholas Cathedral — one of Northern Germany's most significant brick buildings with its 100-meter-high 'Langen Nikolaus' — and the Pomeranian State Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of works by Caspar David Friedrich, offering a unique concert ambiance.
Since 2020, Ursula Haselböck (Vienna) has been leading the artistic direction of the Festspiele MV. Under her leadership, the festival's profile has broadened to include classical mainstream, early music, contemporary compositions, as well as Klezmer, world music, and film scores.
The Festspiele MV combine the high musical quality of international soloists and ensembles with the often remote and atmospherically exceptional venues of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For Greifswald, this means several concert highlights each summer — a welcome addition to the established Greifswald Bach Week.
For its 35th anniversary, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern presents another extensive summer program, serving Greifswald with several concert highlights. The program for the Greifswald venue focuses on St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Pomeranian State Museum.
Tickets are available via festspiele-mv.de and the Greifswald Tourist Information office. A detailed program for each event can be found on the festival website.
Additional concerts may be added in Spring/Summer 2026. Current program details on festspiele-mv.de and the Cathedral's schedule page (dom-greifswald.de).
