About the Market

The Dommarkt is Greifswald's market and welcome tradition for the start of the academic year. It takes place every autumn immediately after the Ceremonial Matriculation of the University of Greifswald at St. Nikolai Cathedral. Student associations, the student union, university sports, Asta, cultural institutions, bookshops, and city offices present themselves on the Domplatz — a compact stage for the new first-year students, their families, and the citizens of Greifswald.

Traditions

The hallmark is the free beer tapping: the mayor and the rector jointly tap a keg and serve free beer to the students. Live DJ music creates the atmosphere, and free bicycle coding by the police offers practical added value for the newcomers.

Local Context

The University of Greifswald was founded in 1456 and is one of the oldest universities in Europe. With its approximately 10,000 students, it significantly shapes the image of the Hanseatic city. St. Nikolai Cathedral, with its 100-meter-high tower, symbolically represents this close connection between the city, the church, and science.

Dommarkt — edition 2026

The 2026 Dommarkt will traditionally take place on the day of the Ceremonial Matriculation in October. Student associations, cultural institutions, and city offices will be represented on the Domplatz. Highlights include the ceremonial beer tapping by the mayor and rector, DJ music, and free bicycle coding.

With the start of the 2026/27 winter semester, the University of Greifswald once again calls for the Ceremonial Matriculation in St. Nikolai Cathedral. Immediately afterwards, the Dommarkt opens on the Domplatz — a compact mix of a social gathering, city market, and welcome event for first-year students.

Stands will feature Asta, the student union, university sports, cultural institutions, and city offices. Those who have brought a bicycle to Greifswald can have it coded for free by the police. Live DJs will provide the soundscape, and the ceremonial beer tapping by the city and university leadership marks the festive start.
