One-day neighborhood festival with around 70 live acts at 32 venues in Kiel-Gaarden
2026
About KulturRotation
KulturRotation — edition 2026
143 — 2026 Edition
This edition bears the running number 143 (KulturRotation 143) and is the second edition after the pandemic break. The concept remains unchanged: an afternoon and evening where 32 venues in the district offer programming simultaneously, from the 2 PM family concert to the 10 PM rock performance. You choose your own path; every route is different.
Focus Areas
In 2026, themes typical of Kiel's eastern shore will be central: Kiel's maritime identity, Gaarden's multilingualism, and the question of how neighborhood culture can remain sustainable under the budget constraints of the state capital. The aftershow party at the Räucherei extends the evening with DJs from the local scene.

A Neighborhood Becomes a Stage
KulturRotation is not a classic festival with a central main stage, but a network: Around 70 live acts will perform at 32 very different venues — cafés, pubs, workshops, churches, sports fields, backyards, the Räucherei at Vinetaplatz, or the ZEIK Creative Center. You walk from performance to performance, choosing your own path through the neighborhood, discovering Kiel-Gaarden from a perspective rarely visible in everyday life. The concept works: For years, KulturRotation has been the cultural highlight of Kiel's eastern shore, attracting audiences from all over the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Program — Three Genres, One Movement
Music is at the center, but not exclusively: Rock, pop, jazz, reggae, cumbia, and classical bands alternate with theater, dance, readings, video installations, and visual arts. Cover bands like The Hoorah Henries (Indie 2000s), The Büdels (Beatles), or the oriental-western fusion project Damaskus perform alongside singer-songwriter sets, brass ensembles like the Kieler Musketiere, or performance artists like Scherbenjongleur with Finja Stoldt. From 11 PM, an official aftershow party at the Räucherei extends the evening until 3 AM — complete with a dance floor and bar.
Gaarden — Kiel's Most Diverse Neighborhood
Gaarden is the district with the most languages and communities in Kiel — and it is precisely this diversity that shapes the festival. KulturRotation consciously takes place *in* the neighborhood, not imposed upon it: Local gastronomy, clubs, social initiatives, and the Soziale Stadt Gaarden office are actively involved. Food trucks are avoided so that local restaurants and snack bars benefit. Artists receive a fair flat fee, supplemented by voluntary donations collected in hats — no one plays for free, and no one profits excessively.
Funded by City, State, and Federal Government
KulturRotation is funded through the federal-state program *Soziale Stadt* (Social City) as well as through the cultural funding of the state capital Kiel. The non-profit Kultur- und Kreativrat Gaarden is the organizer, which hosts exhibitions, neighborhood tours, and creative projects in the area throughout the year. The festival is one of its most visible initiatives — and a model for low-threshold cultural work in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
