Light Art in the Shadow of the Rosenberg Fortress
Since 2010, KRONACH leuchtet has been the main attraction of the Upper Franconian district town of Kronach every year at the end of April / beginning of May. What began as a city marketing idea has developed into one of the most famous light art festivals in Southern Germany. Over nine festival nights, the installations are spread across the medieval old town, the Bürgerspital, the Kühnlenzpassage, and the Landesgartenschaupark.
The 4-Area Concept 2026
With its 16th edition, the festival refines its spatial concept: four clearly separated areas create different experience spaces. The Hussitenplatz serves as the free opening with live music. The Bürgerspital and the Kühnlenzpassage host indoor light art with shadow and projection installations from 6 PM. The Landesgartenschaupark becomes the main stage from 7:30 PM with large installations, a children's area, laser shows, and live music until midnight.
International Light Art Scene
National and international artists are invited every year. In 2026, among others, Anni Laukka (Finland), the Collectif Scale (France), and Gertjan Adema (Netherlands) will be represented, alongside a large contingent of German light artists. Over 65 light points mark the approximately 2-kilometer festival route, which is largely accessible.
Lucas Cranach Meets Light Art
Kronach is the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder – his hometown has since been dedicated to image and perception. KRONACH leuchtet sees itself as a contemporary continuation of this visual tradition: when the alleys of the Cranach town are bathed in light at night, a piece of art history also shines.
