Atmospheric Black Forest Christmas Market in the Mountain Town
The Weihnachtsmarkt St. Georgen im Schwarzwald is the annual Advent market of the highest town in the Middle Black Forest — St. Georgen is located at an altitude of 810 m at the transition from the Black Forest to the Baar plateau. The event is organized by the City of St. Georgen with the clubs and retailers of the city center. The date for 2026 — Saturday, December 5 — is confirmed in the city's official event calendar for the 2026 season.
With its high altitude in the Middle Black Forest, St. Georgen often has snow on the roofs as early as December — the ideal setting for a Black Forest Christmas market. The main street and the market square are festively decorated with wooden huts, fir trees, and fairy lights. Local clubs serve mulled wine and punch, regional exhibitors offer crafts, and bakers and confectioners bring Christmas cookies (Black Forest gingerbread, vanilla crescents, piped cookies) and sweet specialties. Known from previous years: fire shows, brass choirs, and small performances for children.
Like many Black Forest Christmas markets, St. Georgen is characterized by traditional craftsmanship. The stalls feature Black Forest wood carvings, knitted and felt items, ceramics, poinsettias, candles, honey, and other regional products. Local clubs — sports clubs, fire departments, parish communities, kindergartens — operate mulled wine and food stalls, thus financing their annual activities. A compact, family-friendly event without the hustle and bustle of the large city center markets.
St. Georgen im Schwarzwald (around 13,000 inhabitants, Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis) has a special industrial history: the German phonograph industry originated here in the 20th century — brands like Dual, Saba, PE, and Perpetuum-Ebner made St. Georgen the "capital of the record player." Today, museums like the German Phonograph Museum preserve this heritage. The town is located on the European watershed between the Danube and the Rhine and is a great destination for a Black Forest winter trip — with hiking, cross-country ski trails, and ski slopes in the surrounding area.
On Saturday, December 5, 2026, the St. Georgen city center transforms for one day into a Black Forest Christmas market. The main street and market square are festively decorated with wooden huts, fir trees, and fairy lights — a compact, cozy Advent event in the heart of the Middle Black Forest at an altitude of 810 m.
Local clubs serve mulled wine and punch, regional exhibitors offer Black Forest crafts, and bakers and confectioners bring Christmas pastries like Black Forest gingerbread, vanilla crescents, and piped cookies. Known from previous years: fire shows, brass choir performances, and a small children's program.
