Thousands of revellers on 4 km through the city centre — the festive serpent moves on Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, from 1:11 PM through the northern Ruhr area
The Rosenmontagszug Recklinghausen is the most important Carnival event in Vest Recklinghausen — the northern part of the Ruhr area, which historically belonged to the Electorate of Cologne and cultivates its own Carnival culture. Unlike the Carnival strongholds of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Mainz, Recklinghausen has developed its own, down-to-earth format: no giant floats with a tradition of political satire like in Mainz, but rather neighbourhood associations, schools, sports clubs, and Carnival clubs that parade through the city centre with homemade floats, dance groups, and music bands.
On Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, the festive serpent starts moving at 1:11 PM from Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. The symbolic time of 1:11 PM (or 11:11 AM in other strongholds) is a Carnival tradition and marks the beginning of the peak of the festive days. Hours before the start, thousands of revellers in costumes gather at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and along the route.
The Recklinghausen Wallstraßen — the medieval city fortifications were converted into promenades in the 19th century — form the ideal avenue for the procession. The approx. 4 km long route:
The historic rampart streets, with their width and old trees, offer ideal viewing spots — thousands of revellers in costumes line the entire route, collecting Kamelle (sweets), Strüssjer (small bouquets of flowers), and shouting “Recklinghausen Helau!”
Even in 2026 (on Rose Monday of the past Carnival season), around 50,000 revellers braved the rain and lined the route — the local press reported on the indomitable Carnival spirit. Similar numbers are expected in 2026, weather permitting. The Prince and Princess of the season traditionally ride on a decorated float, and journalists from the local press accompany the procession live.
After the procession, Carnival life moves to Rathausplatz: the after-parade party takes place there with live music, DJs, catering, and of course, litres of beer. The revellers celebrate into the night — Rose Monday is an official bridge day or unpaid day off in many companies in the Rhineland.
Ban on glass, route closures, police presence, and medical services — the Recklinghausen city administration organises the day with great effort. When arriving, one should observe the city centre closures and switch to public transport. Detailed safety information will be published by the city in advance on recklinghausen.de.
On Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, Recklinghausen's festive serpent will start moving at 1:11 PM from Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. The approximately 4 km route leads through the historic Wallstraßen — Erlbruch, Kaiserwall, Grafenwall, Kurfürstenwall, Herzogswall, Königswall — back to the starting point. Neighbourhood associations, schools, sports clubs, and Carnival clubs parade through the city centre with homemade floats, dance groups, and music bands; the Prince and Princess of the season ride on a decorated float. Around 50,000 revellers are expected. After the procession, an after-parade party on Rathausplatz with live music and DJs. Free admission, ban on glass, city centre completely closed — public transport recommended.
Konrad-Adenauer-Platz → Erlbruch → Kaiserwall → Grafenwall → Kurfürstenwall → Herzogswall → Königswall → back to Konrad-Adenauer-Platz.
Free admission. After-parade party Rathausplatz: free admission, catering on site.
By train: Recklinghausen Hbf (main station), then a 10-minute walk to the city centre. Highly recommended — the city centre is completely closed on Rose Monday. By car: not recommended — all city centre streets are closed from early morning. Park-and-Ride from outside the city is advisable.
Free — the procession is public, with free access along the entire route.
Carnival costume is desired (but not mandatory). In rainy weather, wear a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes — thousands of revellers attend even in drizzle. Don't forget a bag for Kamelle.
Best viewing spots: Kaiserwall (wide pavement, many trees), Rathausplatz (end point and party location). Position children at the front — most Kamelle are thrown to the front pavement. Safety tip: no glass, no throwing hard objects.
