Schützenfest in the Half-Timbered Old Town
The Schützenfest Nieheim — Altstadtfest is the club festival of the Nieheimer Altschützen and at the same time the annual Altstadtfest of the town in the Höxter district. From Saturday, July 4th to Monday, July 6th, 2026, the small town combines traditional Schützen culture with a modern city festival program — in one of the most beautiful half-timbered old towns in Ostwestfalen.
Nieheim — Town of Half-Timbered Tradition
Nieheim is one of the most historic towns in the Höxter district — small with about 6,500 inhabitants, but rich in half-timbered architecture. The city center is protected as a monument area, and the central market square and surrounding alleys are completely lined with half-timbered houses. The Schützenfest utilizes this unique backdrop: the Schützen parade marches through the town between half-timbered facades, and the festival tent is usually located on the market square.
The Altschützen
The Nieheimer Altschützen are one of the oldest shooting associations (Schützen-Gemeinschaften) in the Höxter district — the name refers to a long tradition. In the 2026 Schützen season (May to September), the Nieheim Schützenfest is one of the approximately 70 festivals in the Höxter district listed in the NW special supplement "Schützenfeste 2026".
Program Highlights
- Schützen parade through the historic old town — past half-timbered facades and the local history museum
- King's Shooting at the flagpole (Vogelstange) — the new king is proclaimed
- Festival tent on the market square with live band program
- Altstadtfest program — culinary stands, live music in the alleys, Sunday shopping in the city center
- Family program — children's carousels, game stations on Sunday afternoon
Kreis Höxter — the Hochstift Paderborn
Nieheim is located in the Höxter district — geographically between Bielefeld, Paderborn, and the Weserbergland. This region was historically the Hochstift Paderborn, one of the most important Catholic prince-bishoprics in Northern Germany. Catholic shooting traditions (Schützenwesen) are particularly strongly rooted here — almost every village has its shooting club and its festival.
