Open-Air theatre festival in the Romanesque cloister since 1949
The Kreuzgangspiele Feuchtwangen are among the oldest open-air theatre festivals in Germany. Founded in 1949, the permanent ensemble performs every summer in the romantic Romanesque cloister of the former collegiate church in Feuchtwangen – a closed courtyard with columned arcades that acts like a natural open-air stage. The festival runs annually from early May to mid-August and is an integral part of the town's identity in the Ansbach district.
The main stage in the cloister seats around 580 people and presents three to four productions for adults, as well as a children's and youth play per season. A smaller venue complements the programme, often featuring more experimental formats or particularly intimate stories. The season is developed by an ensemble that relocates to Feuchtwangen for the summer – the festival thus has a fixed, established character, distinguishing it from purely guest-performance-driven summer theatres.
Feuchtwangen is located on the Romantic Road in the Ansbach district, nestled between the Hesselberg and Frankenhöhe hills. The former collegiate church with its Romanesque cloister characterises the old town – through the Kreuzgangspiele, Feuchtwangen gains supra-regional visibility every summer. The theatre festival works closely with the town and tourism; many overnight stays in the surrounding Middle Franconian region are directly linked to the Kreuzgangspiele programme.
The 2026 season opens with the children's premiere of 'The Little Witch' on May 9 and concludes on August 16. On the main stage in the cloister, the ensemble performs three classics: 'The Great Gatsby' after Fitzgerald (premiere June 4), Goldoni's comedy 'The Servant of Two Masters' (premiere June 11), and Orwell's dystopia '1984' (premiere June 25).
Additionally, the youth play 'The Sandman' after E.T.A. Hoffmann (premiere July 9) and the family play 'The Princess and the Pea' after Andersen (premiere June 18) are presented by the guest ensemble BühneBumm from Hamburg.
