Anniversary weekend of the Steiersche Pfingstburschen e.V. in the wine-growing village of Steigra
Steigra is located in the southern Saalekreis district, where the slopes gently descend to the west, offering views of the Saale-Unstrut wine region on clear days. In this tiny village of just over a thousand souls, a custom has been preserved since 1871 that has long since become history elsewhere: the Kleinpfingstfest of the Steiersche Pfingstburschen. In 2026, the association celebrates its 155th anniversary — a milestone unparalleled in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, for which the Pfingstburschen have organized an extended festival weekend.
The unmarried young men of the village, dressed in white shirts, black trousers, and hats adorned with ribbons, go from house to house. They sing, collect eggs, bacon, and spirits, and on Whit Monday, the bravest climbs the crown of the Pfingstmaie — a tall, decorated birch tree in the middle of the village square. Whoever reaches the top is considered the 'Pfingstkönig' (Pentecost King). It is a ritual that combines Slavic and Protestant-Thuringian roots, nestled here in the Central German Dry Region between Querfurt, Bad Lauchstädt, and the lower Unstrut valley.
Steigra is among the northernmost wine-growing regions in Germany. The Steigra Winegrowers' Association cultivates the chalky slopes where Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Weißburgunder grapes ripen. During the anniversary weekend, the vintners will be serving their wines, and you can taste them right where the grapes grow — a detail that distinguishes this festival from comparable traditional events in the district.
You can reach Steigra from Querfurt by car in ten minutes, or from Halle (Saale) in just under an hour. Those arriving by train should change at Mücheln (Geiseltal) or Naumburg and take a bus. Accommodation in the village is scarce; guesthouses in Querfurt, Mücheln, or the neighboring wine village of Höhnstedt are better options. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, this festival is something of a hidden gem: no stage shows, no festival pomp, but a deeply rooted village community celebrating its traditions without any touristy embellishments.
The Pentecost weekend in 2026 coincides with the 155th anniversary of the Pfingstburschen — and the celebration will be correspondingly grand. The association has expanded the festival program compared to previous years: an additional ceremonial reception on Friday evening, a festive church service on Sunday morning, and a ribbon dance on Whit Monday that brings together former Pfingstburschen with the current generation.
The full detailed program will likely be published on the Facebook page of the Steiersche Pfingstburschen in early May 2026.
