Pentecost in Saalekreis
In many places in Saxony-Anhalt, Pentecost is not just any weekend – but the village festival. Steigra, a village on the edge of the Saalekreis near the Querfurter Platte, is one of them. For four days, clubs, families, and returning locals gather around the Ritter St. Georg inn and on the sports field to celebrate Pentecost as has been the custom for generations.
The festival begins on Pentecost Saturday in the late afternoon with the traditional barrel tapping. A live band plays in the marquee, followed by a DJ – a dance night that often doesn't end until after sunrise. Sunday and Monday are more about the day: morning pint, fife and drum corps, fairground attractions, parade.
Sport, Games, and Family
On Pentecost Monday, the action shifts to the Steigra sports field. This is traditionally where the sports and family program takes place: football tournament for clubs from neighboring villages, children's festival with bouncy castle, pony rides, and craft activities. The hilly foreland of the Mansfelder Land provides the backdrop; in clear weather, the view extends far over the fields.
Those who choose Pentecost as a travel date in the state of Saxony-Anhalt will find several village festivals of this kind in the Saalekreis – Steigra is one of the most characteristic, as it combines all the elements of rural Pentecost tradition: marquee, sports field, local club, and an entire village celebrating together for four days.
