Open Day with Live Demonstrations, Vehicle Exhibition, and Children's Program
The volunteer fire brigade is a central community organization in many Mainz districts, fostering a strong sense of identity. It provides safety, neighborhood assistance, training opportunities, and a social meeting point — and its youth fire brigades are the most important instrument for recruiting young people for volunteer fire service and introducing them to the demands of a modern volunteer fire brigade. The Mainz-Weisenau Youth Fire Brigade, founded in 1976, is among the traditional youth fire brigades in the Mainz city area and looks back on 50 years of continuous youth work in 2026.
Over these five decades, the Weisenau Youth Fire Brigade has trained generations of children and teenagers. Many of them have joined the active Mainz-Weisenau Volunteer Fire Brigade, others have found their path in professional fire services or fire-related professions, and still others have gained life-shaping experiences through youth work — teamwork, responsibility, discipline, technical understanding, physical fitness. The 2026 anniversary is an occasion to honor this continuous work and present the Youth Fire Brigade as a vibrant institution to the local community.
The event venue is the fire station of the Mainz-Weisenau Volunteer Fire Brigade at Alexander-Diehl-Straße 6, which offers the ideal setting for a fire brigade festival with its fleet of vehicles, training rooms, and outdoor area. The program combines the typical elements of fire brigade festivals: live demonstrations where the youth fire brigade presents its drills and operational techniques, a vehicle exhibition featuring current fire service vehicles — fire engine, tanker, rescue vehicle — and possibly historical vehicles, a children's program with a bouncy castle, face painting, and hands-on activities, as well as catering with grilled food, coffee, and cake.
The open day is intentionally designed to be accessible: free admission, families are warmly welcome. The youth fire brigade also uses the festival for recruitment — interested children and teenagers between 10 and 18 years old can learn about the youth work and, if interested, arrange a taster session. For Mainz-Weisenau, the festival is an important local event that strengthens the bond between the fire brigade and its citizens and celebrates the anniversary in a worthy and popular manner.
The 2026 anniversary edition marks half a century of continuous youth fire brigade work in Mainz-Weisenau. Throughout the day, a dense program of stage performances, hands-on activities, and catering will unfold. The morning starts at 11 AM with the official opening, welcome speeches by the brigade leadership and youth leader, greetings from the city and associations, and the first round of demonstrations. The midday brings the main catering period with grilled food, salads, and drinks, while the afternoon develops into the longest program block with family offerings and demonstrations.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the Mainz-Weisenau Youth Fire Brigade and Volunteer Fire Brigade in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of a fire brigade open day: opening with speeches, several rounds of demonstrations throughout the day, continuous vehicle exhibition, children's area with bouncy castle and hands-on activities, catering throughout the day, and winding down in the late afternoon.
