Whitsun festival with Kirta and market day in the Bavarian Forest
The Pfingstfest in Hohenau is one of the central Whitsun events in the southern Bavarian Forest. The market town in the district of Freyung-Grafenau has its festival grounds on the village square, right next to the town hall and the parish church – a classic Lower Bavarian festival arrangement that keeps things lively throughout the Whitsun weekend, from Saturday to Whit Monday.
The program follows the proven structure of a Bavarian Whitsun festival: Saturday is dedicated to the opening with a standing concert, traditional shooting, festival procession, and evening tent entertainment. Sunday brings folk music in the morning and specialty cuisine at noon, followed by a party band in the evening. Whit Monday is primarily a family day and the actual market day with a Kirta atmosphere – carousels, games, pony rides, Punch and Judy shows, face painting, fire department demonstrations.
The supporting organization for the festival is SV Hohenau 1949 e.V., which, together with marksmen, music bands, and the municipality, designs the program. Admission to all program points is free – typical for a village Whitsun festival in this region.
Hohenau is located between Grafenau and Freyung in the inner Bavarian Forest, nestled in a hilly landscape with forests and meadows. The festival tent on the village square is within walking distance of the town center; in the region, the Pfingstfest is a regular meeting point for clubs, families, and visitors from neighboring communities.
The designation "Kirta and Market Day" on Whit Monday refers to the Lower Bavarian custom of also integrating a market with local vendors and food stalls on the third day of a Whitsun festival. This appears traditional and is also an important economic date for local gastronomy and the fairground business.
The Pfingstfest 2026 in Hohenau starts on Saturday, May 23, and ends on Whit Monday, May 25. The entire program takes place at the Hohenau festival grounds (Dorfplatz 22) and is organized by SV Hohenau 1949 e.V.
Saturday begins with the traditional opening: standing concert, traditional shooting, followed by the festival procession through the town. Sunday sees a change of mood: morning pint with folk music, Lower Bavarian specialties for lunch, and a party atmosphere in the evening with a party band. Whit Monday is all about family and the market: Punch and Judy shows, pony rides, games, carousels, fire department demonstrations – plus a traditional market day with local vendors.
