Multi-day walking pilgrimage from Würzburg to Kreuzberg in the Rhön
The Kreuzberg Pilgrimage from Würzburg to Kreuzberg in the Rhön is one of Franconia's oldest and most important pilgrimages. It has been supported for centuries by the Kreuzberg Pilgrimage Brotherhood and is deeply rooted in the religious customs of the Diocese of Würzburg and the entire Lower Franconia region.
The starting point is the Neumünsterkirche in Würzburg's Old Town. From there, the pilgrimage covers approximately 172 kilometers in five daily stages to Kreuzberg, the "holy mountain of the Franconians" with its monastery and pilgrimage church. The route traverses the landscapes between Mainfranken and the Rhön low mountain range.
A characteristic feature is the early start: on the first day, pilgrims gather around 4:40 AM at the Neumünsterkirche. The pilgrimage is characterized by prayer, singing, and quiet contemplation, and is supported by a large community of pilgrims who tackle the strenuous journey together.
The pilgrimage is far more than a hike: it is a lived expression of faith, penance, and hope. For many participants, the annual pilgrimage to Kreuzberg is a firm, identity-forming part of their lives and their connection to the Franconian tradition of piety.
As a spiritual prelude, the Kreuzberg Pilgrimage connects the episcopal city of Würzburg with the pilgrimage site of Kreuzberg in the Rhön. It is one of Bavaria's defining religious customs and resonates far beyond Lower Franconia.
The 2026 edition runs from Thursday, August 20, to Monday, August 24. The meeting point is the Neumünsterkirche in Würzburg, with departure on the first day in the early morning hours around 4:40 AM.
The pilgrimage covers approximately 172 kilometers in five daily stages to Kreuzberg in the Rhön and back. It is organized by the Kreuzberg Pilgrimage Brotherhood under pilgrimage leader Michael Seufert. A preparatory pilgrimage mass is scheduled for August 19, supplemented by several preparatory events beforehand.
Participation in the pilgrimage is free of charge. Pilgrims bear the costs for food and self-organized accommodation along the route.
The meeting point is the Neumünsterkirche in Würzburg's Old Town. Würzburg is easily accessible by ICE and train; the Neumünsterkirche is centrally located in the city center.
The multi-day walking pilgrimage requires good physical condition and appropriate equipment. Pilgrims organize their own overnight stays along the route; organizational information and accommodation details are provided by the Brotherhood.
Those who do not wish to walk the entire route can inquire about partial stages and support on individual days from the pilgrimage leadership.
