„Trad meets Neo“ — four days of Tango in Witten

The Tangofestival Rhein-Ruhr 2026 is among the largest Tango events in Germany, uniting Tango tradition and Neo-Tango under one roof for four days. The motto „Trad meets Neo“ is the programme: Every event at the festival offers both traditional Tango (Argentine Tango from the golden era) and neoclassical Tango music, often in a 50/50 format. Organised by Tangofestival Rhein-Ruhr in cooperation with Kulturforum Witten. Festival dates: March 26th to 29th, 2026.

Two Venues — Saalbau and Haus Witten

The festival takes place at two locations in Witten: the traditional Saalbau Witten (Bergerstraße 25) with its grand ballroom, and Haus Witten (Ruhrstraße 86) — a historic cultural centre with a ballroom feel. Both venues are within walking distance of the city centre, allowing dancers to switch flexibly between Milongas and workshops.

Live Music: Bandonegro and Cuarteto Nochero

Two renowned Tango ensembles form the musical core: Bandonegro — the Polish bandoneon trio, one of Europe's most sought-after Tango ensembles — plays on Friday with a show by Ezgi & Lourdes (~10:00 PM–00:30 AM) and on Saturday. Cuarteto Nochero feat. Catalina Sophie takes over on Sunday. Both live concerts are integrated into the Milongas — dancing while the band plays.

Workshop Stars: Erdemsel/Tse and Tellier/Kostrova

The workshop instructors for 2026 are internationally acclaimed maestros: Murat Erdemsel and Silvina Tse — an established Tango teaching couple from New York with a clear classical approach — and Cédric Tellier and Olga Kostrova — known for their Neo-Tango interpretations. The workshops run on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and cover all levels from Intermediate to Advanced.

Four Days of Programme — from Premilonga to Neolonga

The festival begins on Thursday, March 26th with the Premilonga (Insel Wuppertal, 8:00 PM–1:00 AM, DJ Umberto, 50/50 trad/neo format). Friday, March 27th marks the start of the main programme in Witten: Check-in 4:00 PM, Welcome Milonga 5:00 PM–9:00 PM (DJ Axel Vandernabeele), Traditional Milonga 9:00 PM–4:00 AM (DJ Claudio Coppola), parallel Neolonga 9:00 PM–5:00 AM (DJs Anna, Jean-Marc, Saskia), Bandonegro concert ~10:00 PM–00:30 AM. Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March: Workshops 12:00 PM–5:00 PM, Afternoon Milongas 5:00 PM–9:00 PM, Evening Milongas 9:00 PM–5:00 AM (trad + neo parallel), Live concerts by Bandonegro (Sat) and Cuarteto Nochero (Sun). Additionally, immersive video projections by VJ Andreas Lange and a permanent art/fashion exhibition.

Witten — Cultural City on the Edge of the Ruhr Area

Witten is a city in the southern Ruhr area (Ennepe-Ruhr district) with around 95,000 inhabitants, located at the transition from the Ruhr area to the Sauerland. With Saalbau Witten and Haus Witten, the city boasts two traditional cultural venues that are ideal for Tango festivals of this scale — a combination that has repeatedly led the Tangofestival Rhein-Ruhr to choose Witten in recent years.
