Creative market of the village community in the Rodenäs community center
Rodenäs is a small community with under 200 inhabitants in the extreme northwest of Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Danish border and the Wadden Sea. Despite its manageable size, the village maintains a strong club culture and creative scene — from the DRK local chapter and the Zollhäuser cultural station to private artists who maintain workshops in their gardens.
The creative market brings this diversity together under one roof for a day. The exhibitors set up their stalls in and around the community center: hand-felted wool art, watercolors of the Wadden Sea landscape, wood carvings, self-sewn children's clothing, jewelry made from Wadden Sea finds. Local associations also present themselves — the fire department, DRK, sports club, and church community.
The culinary offerings are small but carefully curated: homemade jams, Frisian baked goods, fresh coffee and tea, along with hearty snacks from the club kitchen. The atmosphere is familiar — those who want to learn more about the Wadden Sea, the history of the dike, or the Low German tradition can chat with the residents.
The community is located on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea and belongs to the district of Nordfriesland. The market takes place in May, a season when the Wadden Sea shows its most colorful hues and spring flowers are in bloom. Visitors to the creative market can combine the day with a mudflat hike or a walk along the dike.
The 2026 creative market will take place on Whit Monday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in and around the Rodenäs community center. All Rodenäs residents with handicraft, artistic, or culinary skills are invited — local associations also have the opportunity to present themselves.
Anyone wishing to participate as an exhibitor should contact Karin Martinsen from the DRK local chapter:
The market opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. A detailed program with times will be published by the municipality of Rodenäs on rodenaes.de in the weeks leading up to the event. As a rule, the DRK local chapter offers a coffee and cake stand for the entire duration of the event, and the local associations present themselves at open pavilions around the community center.
