Open-air concert by the volunteer fire brigade on the North Sea dike
Rodenäs is a municipality in Wiedingharde, the northwesternmost part of Germany — directly on the Danish border, in the district of North Frisia in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The municipality with fewer than 200 inhabitants is located directly on the North Sea dike, and it is precisely this location that gives the Deich-Open-Air its unmistakable character: an open-air concert with the North Sea wind, with the taste of salt in the air and the typically Frisian wide sky.
The organizer is the Rodenäs Volunteer Fire Brigade. Like many community open-airs in Northern Germany, the event serves a dual purpose: a social highlight for the Wiedingharde village community and a source of funding for the fire brigade's equipment. Catering, admission, and stall fees go towards the purchase of material, protective clothing, and training for the brigade.
The festival does not take place annually but at longer intervals — known previous editions were held in 2019 and 2022. The event is again anchored in the official event calendar of the municipality of Rodenäs in 2026. This irregular format makes each edition a special date in Wiedingharde's cultural life.
Rodenäs is characterized by surprisingly active club life for its size. In the official 2026 event calendar, alongside the Deich-Open-Air, other highlights include: Biikebrennen (February 21 — old Frisian fire tradition), Fire Brigade Festival with a theater performance (March 7), "Über uns und uns hinaus" cultural festival (May 14–29), and the Lantern Parade on October 30. The Deich-Open-Air is the municipality's biggest musical event in the summer.
After the 2019 and 2022 editions, the Deich-Open-Air 2026 is officially back in the event calendar of the municipality of Rodenäs. The organizer remains the Rodenäs Volunteer Fire Brigade. Date: Saturday, June 13, 2026.
The venue is the Deich-Open-Air grounds on the North Sea coast of the Wiedingharde municipality. The format follows the proven tradition of Northern German fire brigade open-airs: live music, catering by the brigade, social gathering, and proceeds benefiting the volunteer fire brigade. Detailed program (bands, start time, admission price) will be announced by the Rodenäs Volunteer Fire Brigade shortly before the date — contact: [email protected].
