Action sports, live music, and diversity in the Volksgarten Essen-Kray — free admission
Essen-Kray is a district in the east of the Ruhr metropolis Essen, with nearly 20,000 inhabitants, long shaped by mining and steel, today with a distinct club and neighborhood culture. In the middle of it all is the Volksgarten Essen-Kray: a park with playgrounds, a skate bowl, a stage, and a large pond — a meeting point for families and young people from all over Essen's east side. The KRAY OR DIE festival has been a regular summer event in this park since 2022.
The KRAY OR DIE Youth Culture Festival is a free, one-day festival organized by the Julius-Leber-Haus of AWO Essen together with the Kray youth centers and the Falken district of Essen. Conceptually, it focuses on three themes: action sports (skateboard, BMX, scooter), music (live acts and DJ sets), and diversity — the festival stands openly against discrimination and for respectful coexistence among all generations, communities, and backgrounds. The message is conveyed both on stage and through the marketplace of youth initiatives.
The sporting focus is the Skate Bowl Contest in the Volksgarten's facility. Categories for beginners and advanced, open from age 8, with professional judges from the skateboard and action sports scene (in the past, among others, from skatedeluxe and odyssey). In parallel, there are BMX and Scooter demos, usually with open sessions between the competition runs. Registration takes place on the day of the event on-site and online via kray-or-die.de.
The music stage alternates between DJ sets (Mr. Disco Delight, Jonas & Noah in the past), live acts by regional bands, and solo artists with clear messages against discrimination and for social issues. On the marketplace, youth associations, streetwork teams, clubs, and initiatives from Essen present themselves with interactive stations, workshops, and advice — from neighborhood work to political education.
In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, KRAY OR DIE represents a specific concept of a neighborhood festival: non-commercial, voluntary, supported by many organizations — the Allbau Foundation, Stadtwerke Essen, the district representation, and local sponsors make free admission possible. It is a festival that puts children's and youth culture at the center and makes it visible — right in a district where social issues such as inclusion, education, and diversity are concrete realities.
The KRAY OR DIE Youth Culture Festival 2026 will take place on a Saturday in May in the Volksgarten Essen-Kray — as in previous years, usually between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM. The final date will be announced in advance by the organizers (Julius-Leber-Haus / AWO Essen, Kray Youth Centers, Falken Essen) via kray-or-die.de and the official channels of the City of Essen. Free admission.
Specific lineup for 2026 will be communicated via kray-or-die.de and the social media channels of the Julius-Leber-Haus. Proven judges from the action sports scene (skatedeluxe, odyssey).
