Steele — A District with History
Steele is one of the oldest districts of Essen and was an independent town until its incorporation in 1929. With Kaiser-Otto-Platz and its dense shopping street, the district is one of the liveliest neighborhoods in the city. The name dates back to the medieval town of 'Steele an der Ruhr' — the district has retained its own identity to this day.
Steele Fair Tradition
The Maikirmes in Steele is a fixture on Essen's event calendar. While larger spring fairs in Düsseldorf (Rheinkirmes) or Cologne attract more media attention, the Steele Maikirmes has something the big Volksfests lack: neighborhood atmosphere. The carousels are located right between the houses, cafés, and shops; the locals of Steele stop by after work, and the mix of fairground and local life creates the unique vibe.
Maypole Tradition
The raising of the Maypole on May 1st is the highlight of the extended weekend. In many districts of Rhineland and Westphalia, clubs and heritage associations maintain the tradition of erecting a decorated Maypole on May 1st — usually with live music, a morning pint (Frühschoppen), and stage shows. In Steele, the Maypole raising is part of the fair's program.
Location in the Ruhr Area
Essen, Germany's 8th largest city, is located in the heart of the Ruhr area. The Steele district is southeast of the city center, easily accessible by the U17 subway line, S-Bahn (S1, S3, S9 — Essen-Steele station), and via the A40 motorway.
