Würzburg's Harvest Festival all about Sauerkraut – since 1985
Unterpleichfeld is located in the district of Würzburg in one of Franconia's oldest cabbage-growing areas. For centuries, white and red cabbage have been cultivated in the region – historically, three sauerkraut factories operated in the town, none of which produce today. What remains is the connection to cabbage, which the TSV Unterpleichfeld 1926 e.V. has celebrated annually in October as its club festival since 1985.
The focus of the Krautfest is the cuisine: cabbage roulades (stuffed cabbage rolls), pork knuckle with sauerkraut, vegetarian cabbage lasagna, accompanied by Federweißer (young, semi-fermented must from the Franconian vineyards) and sweet must from the region. The range of dishes is described by the organizer as a "true firework" of cabbage cuisine – a self-confidence that is quite justified in the Würzburg cabbage region.
Parallel to the festival in the community hall, cabbage farmers and agricultural producers from the surrounding area sell fresh cabbage vegetables, apples, pumpkins, potatoes, and sausages at a farmer's market. For children, there is a children's carousel, as well as roasted almonds and peanuts. Live music plays in the hall on both evenings, creating a warm, familial atmosphere that is also affordable for larger families due to the TSV's typical family-friendly prices.
Unterpleichfeld is a municipality in the district of Würzburg in Lower Franconia (Bavaria), north of the university city of Würzburg. The tradition of cabbage cultivation here is not a marketing gimmick, but part of everyday life: cabbage farmers continue to work the surrounding fields. The Krautfest is traditionally celebrated on the first weekend in October, coinciding with the harvest thanksgiving. The TSV, founded in 1926, combines tradition with club life and finances a large part of its youth work through the festival.
The 2026 Krautfest is the 39th edition of the festival (premiere 1985, 2025 = 38th edition). As every year, it takes place on the first weekend of October – the classic date for the cabbage harvest. The organizer is the TSV Unterpleichfeld 1926 e.V. together with the regional farmers' association, local businesses, and the club Salut Unterpleichfeld.
In the festival hall: cabbage roulades, pork knuckle with sauerkraut, vegetarian cabbage lasagna, accompanied by Federweißer and sweet must. In the outdoor area: farmer's market with fresh cabbage vegetables, apples, potatoes, pumpkins, and sausages from local farmers. Live music in the hall on both evenings.
By car via the A7 (exit Schweinfurt/Werneck), then take the state road to Unterpleichfeld. By train to Würzburg Hbf, then take a regional bus line. Parking spaces are available around the community hall.
Free admission. Food and drinks at family-friendly club prices (main courses approx. €8–€12, Federweißer and sweet must by the glass).
Festival opens Fridays from 11 AM, Saturday and Sunday during the day and in the evening. The Krautfest is significantly less crowded than, for example, the Würzburg Hofbräufest – very family-friendly, even with small children.
