Non-commercial cultural festival in the Bayreuth Wilhelminenaue
The name "Kraut & Rüben" (Cabbage & Turnips) doesn't stand for disorder, but for a field of creativity: a place where independent cultural initiatives from the region come together, flourish, and form a visible ecosystem. Since 2017, the Saalmitte team has organized the open air in the Wilhelminenaue, the green riverside park of the Upper Franconian festival city of Bayreuth (Bavaria).
The musical program is spread across two stages: DJs spin electronic music on the lake stage by the water, while live bands perform in the hedge theater. The spectrum ranges from techno and electronic sets to band projects off the mainstream – music that rarely finds space elsewhere gets its stage here.
The festival deliberately forgoes sponsors and advertising. Instead, ecological values are at the center: reusable cups, regional drinks, and environmentally friendly practices. Arrival by public transport and bicycle is expressly recommended. The grounds are freely accessible – culture should be for everyone.
The green urban backdrop of the Wilhelminenaue transforms into a "wild cultural and picnic space" where culture can be experienced communally, peacefully, and freely – across generations. Blankets on the meadow, electronic bass by the lake, bands behind hedges: Kraut & Rüben is a deliberately different festival, a counter-design to commercial event operations, and a highlight of the alternative Bayreuth cultural scene.
On May 14, 2026, the Saalmitte team will once again transform the Wilhelminenaue into a wild cultural and picnic space. The program unfolds on two stages: electronic music with DJs on the lake stage by the water, and live bands in the hedge theater. The festival remains true to its concept: non-commercial, without sponsors and advertising, with reusable cups, regional drinks, and an ecological claim. Admission is free.
The festival grounds are freely accessible. The festival deliberately operates without sponsors; support through drinks and donations on-site.
