The grand Carnival session of the Neunkirchen Carnival Committee in the Neue Gebläsehalle
Saarlanders call their Carnival "Faasend“ or "Fasenacht“, and in the district of Neunkirchen, it is celebrated particularly seriously — meaning particularly exuberantly. The Neunkircher Karneval Ausschuss e.V. (NKA) unites eight Carnival societies from the district town under one roof and organizes the collective major events of the season: from the season's opening on November 11th, through the handover of the keys at the town hall, to the grand Rose Monday parade. Over a million visitors have been counted at NKA events in recent decades.
The Community Session is the social and programmatic highlight of the season. In the Neue Gebläsehalle — a former industrial building from the heyday of the Neunkirchen Ironworks, now used as an event location — the eight NKA societies each present their strongest program numbers. The result is a kind of "Best of Saarland Carnival": satirical speeches with local political wit, male and female dance groups, acrobatic dance troupes, show dances, singing, and comedy acts.
The Neue Gebläsehalle is an industrial monument of great value — listed in the Saarland Monument Register, part of the former ironworks complex, and today a central venue for concerts, trade fairs, and town festivals. When several thousand Carnival enthusiasts sit, toast, sway, and shout "Alaaf" here, industrial romance and Carnival revelry blend into a picture that only works in Neunkirchen.
The Community Session is embedded in a busy week:
Anyone who wants to experience Saarland Carnival culture in its purest form should plan for the whole weekend.
Unlike in Cologne or Mainz, Saarland Carnival is more personal, club-driven, and a bit drier in tone — the satirical speeches often focus on local politics in the Neunkirchen district, on Saarland peculiarities, on the eternal proximity to France and Rhineland-Palatinate. The audience: club members, families, former Carnival royalty, often in costume, always good for a drink.
The Community Session is embedded in an entire Carnival week, which begins on February 10th with the children's dance at Saarpark-Center, officially starts on February 12th with the key handover at the town hall, and concludes on February 16th with the grand Rose Monday parade.
