Five open-air Thursdays in Neunkirchen city center
When the sun slowly begins to set over Neunkirchen, what many Saarlanders call the best Thursday of the year begins once a week: the City Musiksommer. For over a decade, the city management of the Saarland district town in the Neunkirchen district has been transforming the city center into an open-air concert hall for five consecutive Thursdays — with stages at the Bliesterrassen, Stummplatz, and Hammergraben.
The concept is deliberately accessible: free entry, no festival fences, no tickets, no mass crowds. You come straight after work, grab a beer or an Aperol from the neighboring café, sit on one of the steps of the Bliesterrassen or lean against the fountain at Stummplatz. For over two hours, you'll hear live music from Saarland and the greater region — mostly stylistically diverse, from classics to original compositions.
Behind the format is a clear urban development goal: the Neunkirchen city center — shaped by the structural change of the former steel town — should remain a vibrant meeting place. Just like the neighboring Neunkirchen Stadtfest (city festival) or the laser show on the 'Neunkirchen leuchtet' stage, the City Musiksommer benefits from a lively Stumm monument area with the Saarpark-Center within earshot.
The artist selection reflects the Saarland music scene: cover bands, rock, pop, soul, and blues acts, classic folk ensembles with multi-part vocals. It's not a festival with big headliners, but a deliberately regional program — and that's exactly what makes it charming. Those who live in Neunkirchen often know the bands personally, which makes the atmosphere feel familiar.
The City Musiksommer complements the program of Neunkircher Kultur GmbH (NK-Kultur), which simultaneously presents international acts in the neighboring Stummhalle cultural center, in the Gebläsehalle, or at large open-air events at Stummplatz. Visitors to Neunkirchen can ideally combine the Thursday evening with a weekend trip including a visit to the Stadtfest or a concert in the Gebläsehalle.
In 2026, the City Musiksommer will feature five Thursday dates at the Bliesterrassen, Stummplatz, and Hammergraben. The concerts start at 5 PM and end around 8 PM. The organizer is the city management of the district town of Neunkirchen.
All concerts are free. No registration required.
Neunkirchen is easily accessible via the A8 motorway (Neunkirchen-Ost/-West exit). By public transport: Neunkirchen station is a 5-minute walk from the concert venues, RE3 line Saarbrücken–Mainz–Frankfurt.
At the Saarpark-Center (paid) or in the parking lots at the town hall. Often fills up quickly during concerts — we recommend public transport.
Completely free. No tickets needed, just show up.
Cafés, bars, and restaurants around Stummplatz, Bliesterrassen, and Hammergraben are open on Thursdays and offer outdoor service.
