One-day Open Air for Electronic and Reggae at the Kulturkiosk
The Freiluftbecken Open Air takes place on the dance floor at the Kulturkiosk in Bayreuth's Wilhelminenaue — a park-like recreational area on the outskirts of the city, created in 2016 for the Bavarian State Garden Show. The Kulturkiosk is a permanently operated off-venue with outdoor catering and a small event area, focusing on dance, lounge culture, and indie programs.
The musical profile is precisely defined: electronic dance music (House, Dub-Techno, Downtempo) and Reggae (classic Roots sounds, Dub, Reggaeton). This combination is rarely found at Bavarian festivals and gives Freiluftbecken its unique identity. Local DJs from the Bayreuth and Upper Franconia scene perform alongside acts from Munich, Berlin, and the southern German reggae scene.
A special feature is the consistent safe space approach: the festival promotes an awareness team, clear rules of conduct against discrimination, harassment, and assault, and an atmosphere that specifically appeals to younger and queer festival-goers. The concept is part of a growing movement in the southern German festival scene, reacting critically to incidents at larger mainstream festivals.
With an early bird ticket of €10, Freiluftbecken consciously positions itself as an accessible festival that avoids high price barriers. The festival organizers are additionally financed through outdoor catering and soft drink sales. Eight hours of programming in an open-air environment on a small budget — the concept clearly targets the young, local audience from the greater Bayreuth, Bamberg, and Coburg area.
Bayreuth is primarily known internationally for the Richard Wagner Festival and the Bayreuth Baroque Festival. The alternative, younger cultural scene finds an important home in the Kulturkiosk and similar off-venues. Freiluftbecken Open Air is an anchor of this scene and part of the growing Bayreuth festival summer, which is now listed by the Bayerische Tagblatt festival list with eight open-air events.
The Freiluftbecken Open Air 2026 runs on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 2 PM to 10 PM on the dance floor at the Kulturkiosk in Bayreuth's Wilhelminenaue. Over the eight hours of programming, DJs and live acts alternate — the afternoon with more relaxed Downtempo and Reggae sets, the evening with denser House and Dub-Techno sounds.
The festival once again emphasizes its commitment to being a safe space: an on-site awareness team, clear house rules, and a deliberately non-commercial festival atmosphere.
