One of Europe's largest classical open-air concerts in Luitpoldhain
The Klassik Open Air Nürnberg is one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. For two evenings in the summer, the Luitpoldhain, a vast park landscape in the Nuremberg city district, transforms into a massive open-air stage. Tens of thousands of people spread out their picnic blankets and listen to great symphonic works – for free and in a relaxed atmosphere.
The festival is supported by the city's two major ensembles: the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg (orchestra of the Staatstheater Nürnberg) and the Nürnberger Symphoniker. Each orchestra curates its own evening with a thematically framed program, complemented by a family concert in the afternoon.
The »Picknick im Park« has become a trademark: families, groups of friends, and classical music fans spend the evening on the lawn with their own provisions, while the music echoes through the Luitpoldhain. The event traditionally concludes with a fireworks display. Since the year 2000, the event has attracted around 120,000 visitors annually.
The independent city of Nuremberg, the largest city in Franconia within the administrative region of Middle Franconia, is a significant cultural metropolis in Bavaria. The Luitpoldhain, originally designed as a park, offers the ideal natural backdrop for a classical experience of this magnitude.
The Klassik Open Air Nürnberg 2026 will be celebrated on two evenings in the Luitpoldhain. On Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg will open the concert series: at 11 a.m. with a family concert and at 8 p.m. with the evening's main concert themed »Family and Friends«, both conducted by General Music Director Roland Böer. On Saturday, August 8, 2026, the City of Nuremberg and the Nürnberger Symphoniker invite you to a concert evening at 8 p.m. titled »Rhythm of the World«. The two orchestras will perform for the 25th time in the Luitpoldhain in 2026. The program includes works by Strauss and Gershwin. Admission is free.
The Luitpoldhain is easily accessible by subway (line U1, station Bärenschanze or via the paths in Volkspark Dutzendteich) and by bus and tram. Due to the large crowds, traveling by public transport is recommended.
Admission is free. It is advisable to arrive early and bring a picnic blanket and provisions.
Each of the two concert evenings features one orchestra; on the afternoon of the first evening, there is a family concert. Current dates and programs can be found at klassikopenair.nuernberg.de.
