About Kitzingen District Parade

The Kitzingen District Carnival Parade is one of the most traditional carnival parades in Lower Franconia. Organized by KiKaG (Kitzinger Karnevalsgesellschaft e.V.), the festive procession of floats, walking groups, and troupes from across the Kitzingen district winds its way through the historic city center of the wine town on the Main. The parade traditionally kicks off at 2:11 PM – a nod to the carnival date of 11/11.

District's Main Carnival Attraction

The Kitzingen District Carnival Parade is one of the largest carnival events in the Franconian wine region. The organizer is KiKaG e.V. – the Kitzingen Carnival Society – which has been organizing the parade in the district town of Kitzingen for many decades. Participants include carnival clubs, troupes, music bands, and carnival groups from the entire Kitzingen district as well as from neighboring Lower Franconian districts.

Tradition and Symbolism at 2:11 PM

The procession traditionally starts at 2:11 PM – a reference to the "carnival number" 11/11. In both Rhenish and Franconian carnival traditions, this signifies the start and affirmation of the carnival season, which begins every year on November 11th at 11:11 AM. The parade proceeds along the main routes of Kitzingen's old town, past the Main riverbank, and through the historic quarters with their medieval city gates.

Floats, Troupes, Costumes

The floats address local and regional themes, often with a satirical take on local politics. The KiKaG troupes and affiliated societies from Iphofen, Volkach, Marktbreit, Dettelbach, and Wiesentheid present their dance troupes and music groups. Thousands of spectators line the route – traditionally in costume and in a festive carnival mood. "Helau!" rings out from the spectators' throats, the typical Franconian carnival cheer.

Carnival Stronghold in the Franconian Wine Region

  • Largest carnival parade in the Kitzingen district
  • Starts at 2:11 PM – a tribute to the carnival number
  • Floats, troupes, and walking groups from the entire district
  • Thousands of spectators in the historic wine town on the Main

The Kitzingen district, part of the Lower Franconia administrative region in the state of Bavaria, is one of Franconia's most important carnival strongholds. Alongside the major Rhenish carnival metropolises of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Mainz, Franconian Fastnacht (carnival) forms a distinct tradition with its own troupes, ceremonial sessions, and a series of large parades – Kitzingen is one of its highlights.

Kitzingen District Parade — edition 2026

The traditional Kitzingen District Carnival Parade by KiKaG will take place in 2026 on Wednesday, March 4th. The festive procession will start punctually at 2:11 PM and wind its way through the city center of the wine town on the Main. Despite increased regulations and costs, the parade will continue – a central after-show party will be omitted in 2026.

KiKaG has confirmed the traditional district parade for 2026: On March 4, 2026, the festive procession will move through Kitzingen's city center at 2:11 PM. Floats, walking groups, and troupes from the entire Kitzingen district, as well as from affiliated societies in neighboring districts, will participate.

Due to increased costs and organizational challenges, KiKaG will forgo a central after-show party in 2026. Instead, local restaurants will offer special carnival menus and after-show programs in Kitzingen's city center. The parade itself remains the undisputed centerpiece of the carnival day.
