Traditional midsummer Kirmes in the Freisen district on St. Wendel Land
Nestled in the gentle hills of St. Wendel Land lies Schwarzerden, a district of the municipality of Freisen — and one of the northernmost villages in Saarland, close to the border with the Hunsrück region. When the summer holidays have begun and the cornfields around the village are in full bloom, Schwarzerden celebrates its Kirmes on the second Sunday in July.
The Kirmes traditionally spans three days — Saturday to Monday — and follows the classic three-step pattern of Saarland village Kirmessen: Opening on Saturday evening with the tapping of the first keg, main festivities on Sunday with a morning pint and family afternoon, and a relaxed conclusion on Kerb Monday. The venue is the festival grounds in the district, and the Kirmes is organized by the municipality of Freisen together with the local association Schwarzerden.
In the festival tent, local associations treat their guests to Saarland specialties: Schwenker (marinated grilled meat), Lyoner (regional sausage), bratwurst, fried potatoes, fries, and of course, draft beer. On the festival grounds, a small Ferris wheel, carousels, and a shooting gallery provide entertainment. Live music comes from regional bands from the St. Wendel and Birkenfeld areas.
Unlike the large folk festivals in Saarbrücken or Neunkirchen, the Schwarzerden Kirmes remains a true village festival: manageable, familial, without a tourist filter. Anyone wanting to experience Saarland in its most rural and original form — dialect, club life, conviviality — will find it here.
The district is located on the edge of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, which offers excursions with its mixed forests, rock formations, and hiking trails. Nearby Schloss Dagstuhl, a research center for computer science, is also well-known. Geocaching enthusiasts will find a vibrant scene around Schwarzerden.
The 2026 edition, following the traditional rhythm, falls on the second weekend in July, July 11 to 13, 2026. The exact date and program will be confirmed by the municipality of Freisen in spring 2026.
The exact program will be published on freisen.de in June 2026.
