Kirchweih in the Erzgebirge Foothills

Schlößchen is a district of the municipality of Amtsberg in the Erzgebirgskreis district, located in the Wilisch valley between Chemnitz and Marienberg. The Kirchweih — often simply called «Kirms» or «Kirmes» in the Erzgebirge — is one of the oldest and most enduring village festivals in the region: an annual celebration commemorating the consecration of the village church, which still plays a central role in club life in many small towns in Saxony, especially in the Erzgebirge.

In Schlößchen, SV Blau Weiß Schlößchen organizes the festival. The event lasts two days and takes place at Schlößchen, directly by the sports field. The supporting program varies from year to year: sometimes with a parade, sometimes with a dance evening, sometimes with a children's program — a deliberately non-standardized tradition that each generation fills with new content.

What Kirchweih means in the Erzgebirge

Unlike the large city festivals in the region, the Kirchweih is a festival of the village community itself: clubs, the fire department, the church community, and neighbors organize it together; the guests are often also the active participants. Visitors experience a piece of living Saxon village culture away from the tourist trails. Amtsberg is located in the heart of the Erzgebirgskreis district, between the classic Erzgebirge towns of Marienberg, Zschopau, and Annaberg-Buchholz.
