One of the oldest marksmen's associations in Northern Germany (est. 1564)
The Wietmarschen Marksmen's Association was founded in 1564, boasting one of the oldest uninterrupted club traditions in Northern Germany. Civic guards, community defense groups, and shooting associations shaped the rural areas of the early modern period, and Wietmarschen has kept this tradition alive to this day. The annual Schützenfest is the club's central event and, at the same time, one of the town's most important civic festivals.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Friday, July 3rd, to Monday, July 6th. Friday opens the festival calendar with an opening evening that is also dedicated to youth shooting. Saturday is all about the party night with a DJ program and a long evening of dancing. Sunday, with the grand parade starting at 3 PM and lining up in the market square, forms the public highlight. Monday concludes with a church service, the king's shooting, proclamation, and evening ball.
The Sunday afternoon parade is the visual centerpiece of the weekend. Hundreds of marksmen, king couples, music bands, banner carriers, youth delegations, and festival committees march through Wietmarschen, stopping at the Matthias-Stift before gathering in the market square. Residents and guests line the route, greeting the clubs with applause.
Monday evening is dedicated to the evening ball with the hit singer Christin Stark as the live act. This gives the festival's conclusion a special musical accent that goes beyond the usual club program. The proclamation of the new king couple takes place around 1 PM, transitioning into the festive evening.
Wietmarschen is a municipality in the Grafschaft Bentheim district and is one of those places where the marksmen's tradition is deeply embedded in village culture. The Schützenfest thus serves not only as a sporting and social event but also as an annual point of identification for the entire population.
With its clear four-day structure, the Schützenfest offers both members and external guests a good overview. Each day has its own character, and guests can specifically attend individual program points.
The king's shooting on Monday is the sporting and symbolic core of the festival. Whoever achieves the king's shot takes over the club's royal title for one year. The proclamation around 1 PM transitions from the sporting to the festive phase and forms the prelude to the evening ball with Christin Stark.
