Village Schützenfest in the Friesoythe district — June 13th to 15th, 2026
Markhausen is one of the rural communities belonging to the town of Friesoythe. Like all Friesoythe districts, Markhausen maintains its independent club life, at the center of which is the Markhausen Marksmen's Association. The annual Schützenfest is THE central club event and highlight of the village calendar.
With the date of June 13th to 15th, 2026, Markhausen joins the busy Friesoythe Schützenfest season, which began in May with Ahrensdorf and will end in August with Neuvrees. In between, almost every weekend one or two Friesoythe districts celebrate their respective Schützenfest — a dense and diverse Schützenfest culture, as is characteristic of the Oldenburg Münsterland region.
The program follows the proven dramaturgy of a North German village Schützenfest: Saturday festival opening, assembly of the marksmen, king's shooting, and festival ball with a dance band. Sunday festival service, festival parade through the village with friendly clubs, proclamation of the royal couple, Frühschoppen. Monday family day with children's program and festival conclusion.
Marksmanship in the Oldenburg Münsterland — especially in the northern district of Cloppenburg — is strongly influenced by Catholic tradition. The Markhausen Marksmen's Association also stands in this tradition, with a festival service, church accompaniment, and close ties to the parish. This religious component distinguishes the Schützenfeste here from the predominantly Protestant Schützenfeste in the heath regions of Lower Saxony.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the Marksmen's Association in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Schützenplatz Markhausen, Friesoythe district. A 1 exit Cloppenburg, then approx. 25 km. Parking at the Schützenplatz and in the surrounding streets.
Admission prices for dance evenings on site. Festival parade, festival service, and Frühschoppen are freely accessible.
The festival parade on Sunday is the most popular event — a great opportunity to experience West Oldenburg customs up close.
