Tradition in the Oberallgäu
The Viehscheid is a traditional alpine custom: at the end of summer, the animals return from the high pastures to the valley and are allocated (»geschieden«) to their owners. The Wertach Viehscheid is considered one of the oldest in the Allgäu and is a firm fixture in the calendar of Allgäu cattle drives. Wertach is located in the district of Oberallgäu in the administrative region of Swabia in Bavaria.
Course of the Day
Alphorns sound early in the morning. Between approximately 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM, around 700 animals from six alpine pastures arrive one after another in the village center. Sociability and Refreshments
Food and drink stands as well as performances by local bands create a festive atmosphere around the fire station. The Wertach Viehscheid combines rural tradition, Allgäu joie de vivre, and warm sociability into an authentic Volksfest (folk festival).
