Burg Rode — the Moated Castle in the Heart of Herzogenrath
The Burgfest Herzogenrath is the annual staging at Burg Rode — the medieval moated castle that has shaped the cityscape of Herzogenrath since the 11th century. On Sunday, June 7, 2026, the first weekend of June, the castle courtyard and grounds transform into a lively medieval market with a program for the whole family.
The Limburger Ritterschaft
In the castle courtyard, the Limburger Ritterschaft sets up its historical camp — knights, squires, maids, and artisans in authentic costume. Show fights with swords and shields, archery demonstrations, and courtly dances offer insights into the life of the late Middle Ages. The Ritterschaft is one of the most renowned medieval reenactment groups in the region and regularly performs at larger castle festivals in the Eifel and Rhineland.
Arts and Crafts Market and Music
In front of and around the castle grounds, the Arts and Crafts Market unfolds: potters, blacksmiths, leatherworkers, felt artists, weavers, beekeepers — all stalls adhere to the medieval craft profile. On the central stage, school bands, choirs, and local music groups can be experienced — the Burgfest also serves as a showcase for the city's young musical talent.
Sunday Shopping Event
Parallel to the Burgfest, Herzogenrath's retailers open their doors for a Sunday shopping event. The city center around Kleikstraße and Bahnhofstraße thus becomes an extended festival mile. Families can combine their visit to the castle grounds with a stroll through the town.
Herzogenrath — Border Town in the Three-Country Corner
Herzogenrath is located in the Aachen region, directly on the Dutch border (Kerkrade). The historical connection to the Limburg region also explains the naming of the Ritterschaft. Admission is free, and the family character is paramount — a perfect Sunday for parents with children who want to experience the Middle Ages alive.
