Traditional Kärwa in the Burgthann district of Unterferrieden
The municipality of Burgthann in the Nürnberger Land district in Middle Franconia preserves an extraordinary custom: throughout the year, seven independent Kirchweihen (Kärwa) take place in the various districts of Burgthann. One of these is the Kärwa in Unterferrieden, a district in the northeast of the municipality.
The Kärwa Unterferrieden will take place from August 22nd to 24th, 2026. The opening ceremony in the festival tent on Friday evening, with a beer tapping and dance music, marks the start. Saturday will feature program items for younger guests, and Sunday is dedicated to the classic Kärwa day with a festive church service, Kirchweih tree climbing, and Frühschoppen (morning pint).
The Kirchweih – usually called »Kärwa« in Franconia – dates back to the consecration festival of the local church and is today an occasion for a lively community and village gathering. The traditional Kirchweih tree is erected centrally, young men climb it for prizes, and the festival tent fills with dancing couples and families.
Unterferrieden is one of the smaller districts of Burgthann. The Kärwa here is all the more intimate and authentic – a classic Middle Franconian village festival, attended by locals and guests from the neighboring villages of Burgthann, Mimberg, Pattenhofen, Ezelsdorf, and Oberferrieden.
With seven Kirchweihen per year, Burgthann is a special municipality in the Franconian customs calendar. Those who want to experience the diversity of Middle Franconian Kärwa culture will find several opportunities in Burgthann's annual program.
The Kirchweih Unterferrieden 2026 will take place from August 22nd to 24th in the festival tent in the Unterferrieden district of Burgthann. The opening on Friday evening marks the start.
As with the other seven Burgthann Kirchweihen, Sunday features the festive church service, Frühschoppen, and Kirchweih tree climbing – an authentic piece of Middle Franconian traditional culture.
