Franconian Wine and Palatinate Nectar in the Castle Courtyard
The Wine Festival at Burgthann Castle is a charming one-day event organized by the Burgverein Burgthann e.V., dedicated to the preservation and cultural revitalization of the historic hilltop castle. The castle courtyard – nestled within the castle walls, overlooking the Schwarzach Valley – offers an unusual setting for a wine festival, distinguishing it from the ground-level market square wine festivals common in the region.
The wine selection ranges from dry Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau from Main Franconia to robust Palatinate Rieslings and Pinot Noirs. Rosé wines, sparkling wine, and frizzante are also available. The food menu is intentionally kept small and focused: sausages, various cheeses, Flammkuchen, open-faced sandwiches (Schmalzbrot, Tomatenbrot), accompanied by coffee and cake.
Burgthann is a market town with around 11,000 inhabitants in the Nürnberger Land district (Middle Franconia, Bavaria). The historic castle, with origins dating back to the 12th century, is the town's landmark. It sits enthroned on a spur above the Schwarzach Valley, about 25 kilometers southeast of Nuremberg and not far from the beginning of the Altmühl Valley.
The wine festival is not commercially driven. It is an event organized by volunteers, with proceeds supporting the castle's upkeep. Admission is free, and a children's program in the afternoon makes the festival family-friendly.
The wine festival begins on Saturday afternoon with the children's program; the wine stands in the castle courtyard open at 5:00 PM. The atmosphere is defined by the castle walls and the view over the Schwarzach Valley – a setting rarely found in this form in Middle Franconia.
Live entertainment (acoustic or a small band) provides the musical backdrop without overpowering conversation – the concept clearly aims for relaxed wine service in a historic ambiance.
Free admission. Wine glass deposit, food and drinks at club-friendly prices. Proceeds go towards the preservation of Burg Burgthann.
By car: A 3 Nuremberg–Regensburg, exit Burgthann. By train: Burgthann station on S-Bahn line S2 Nuremberg–Altdorf, approx. 20-minute uphill walk from the station to the castle.
In case of bad weather, the wine festival will take place in the castle hall (covered indoor area).
