A True Nuremberg District Kirwa
Nuremberg is the city with one of the densest district Kirwa cultures in Germany — the city of Nuremberg lists around forty Kirchweihen in its districts annually. The Kirchweih am Nordostbahnhof is among the most traditional of them and has been celebrated since the 1950s.
Where is Nordostbahnhof?
Nordostbahnhof is more of a train station than a distinct neighborhood today — it belongs to the Schoppershof district in Nuremberg's northeast. The Kirchweih takes place on a meadow directly in front of the 'Nordostbahnhofsiedlung' (Nordostbahnhof settlement), near Leipziger Straße and Leipziger Platz. Schoppershof is one of those compact Nuremberg districts where living, small businesses, and club life are closely intertwined — an ideal prerequisite for a district Kirwa that truly belongs to the neighborhood.
Kirchweih as a Neighborhood Festival
Unlike the rural Franconian Kirwas (with Kirwabaum, Madla zamspilln, Betzn austanzen), the Nuremberg district Kirwa is a more modern format: carousels for children, beer benches with 'Seidla Bier' (the Franconian 0.5-liter glass), classic festival catering (Bratwurst, Schäuferla, Schaschlik), stage with live music, and DJ. Religion is more of an occasion than the content — the original patronal meaning of 'Kirchweih' takes a backseat in favor of the neighborhood festival.
A Vibrant Tradition Despite the Big City
What distinguishes the Nordostbahnhof Kirwa from many other Nuremberg district Kirwas: It is truly supported by the district, not by an external fairground association. District clubs, residents, and small business owners organize the festival together. This rootedness in the Schoppershof neighborhood has remained intact even after decades of Nuremberg's urban development — the reason why the Kirchweih has been running continuously since the 1950s.
